Outcomes and Mathematics at Whatcom
Whatcom Community College has developed and adopted a list of 61 abilities that faculty believe all of our graduates should achieve. These abilities cluster around the categories of knowing, thinking, communicating, relating, and integrating. Every course one takes at Whatcom will give the individual an opportunity to acquire and practice some of these abilities and will evaluate the mastery of them. In mathematics for "knowing", the student will apply mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills to expand personal abilities and demonstrate individiual understanding of the material. One will have opportunities to share information with classmates to enhance each others understanding. One will also have the chance to formulate and respond to questions in order to gain a better understanding of mathematics. For "thinking" , the student will learn to apply critical thinking, problem-solving, and quantitative reasoning skills to the study of material in the course. One will be expected share these skills with their peers. For "Communicating," the individual will learn to express him or herself (in written and/or verbal form) using appropriate terminology and symbolic language. One will learn strategies to use in the study of mathematical content and will learn communication strategies to enhance either individual or group interaction with mathematical content. Students taking math classes at Whatcom may expect any of the following methods of assessment: group and/or individual self-assessments, graded exercises, work at the board, critique by other students, class participation/discussion, homework, quizzes, unit tests, and final exams.
